Launch Date
PMI plans to launch the PMBOK® Guide in 10 languages at the same time as the English version, in third quarter of 2017.
Agile Comes to the PMBOK® Guide
The PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition will feature several significant content enhancements. Most notably, this edition will include expanded coverage of agile. This reflects evidence from Pulse of the Profession® research that agile is used by increasing numbers of organizations in the management of some or all of their projects. By including this information, PMI will align proven foundational project management concepts with the evolving state of the profession today.
Significant detail on agile will be included in an appendix. Please note that this appendix will be available for your viewing, but will not be open for comment during the exposure draft process.
As a companion to the PMBOK® Guide, we also plan to publish a practice guide focused on agile tentatively planned for the third quarter of 2017.
More Content Enhancements
New in the sixth edition, each section (or knowledge area) of the guide will have three introductory sections.
- Key Concepts, consolidating information fundamental to a specific knowledge area.
- Trends and Emerging Practices not yet widely used.
- Tailoring Considerations, describing aspects of the project or environment to consider when planning the project.
Other content enhancements include:
- More emphasis on strategic and business knowledge, including discussion of project management business documents.
- Information on the PMI Talent Triangle™ and the essential skills for success in today’s market.
It’s a Guide and a Standard
The Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) contains both a standard (The Standard for Project Management) and aguide within the same book.
- The standard describes the processes, inputs and outputs that are considered good practices for managing projects.
- The guide expands on the standard with additional information on key concepts, emerging trends, and tailoring considerations, as well as tools and techniques used in project management.
The standard section, which was exposed for comment earlier this year, provides the foundation for the PMBOK® Guide. All other information in thePMBOK® Guide is aligned with the Standard for Project Management.
New for 2016: A Two-Stage Process
PMI is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards developer, and our process conforms with ANSI procedures. This means that our standards are developed and approved using a consensus-based process that ensures that all interested stakeholders can participate.
The process for the PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition exposure draft differs from previous editions.
- Stage 1—for The Standard for Project Management—ran from 7 March 2016 to 6 April 2016. It is now closed. This was a full consensus review and each of the 4,424 comments we received was adjudicated by a committee of PMI volunteers.
- Stage 2—open now—is for the guide section only, which makes up the bulk of the PMBOK® Guide. As in the previous stage, the volunteer committee will consider all comments received in stage 2 with full scrutiny and consideration. Please note that, because this is a limited consensus review, comments will not receive a formal response.
